Pro Tips
Grind Size: A finer grind increases extraction, intensifying flavour and strength. Too fine can lead to over-extraction and bitterness, while too coarse can result in under-extraction and sourness.
Temperature: Higher temperatures enhance acidity, while lower temperatures reduce acidity, highlight sweetness, and minimize bitterness.
Brew Ratio & Yield: To increase strength (viscosity), use a higher dose, a finer grind, or a shorter brew time. For clarity and brightness, adjust for a longer ratio or slightly coarser grind.
Solubility: Light roasts require a finer grind and/or higher temperature to extract flavours fully. Medium-dark roasts extract more easily and may benefit from a slightly coarser grind and/or lower temperature.
Los Rodriguez Coffee Farms
The Rodriguez Family
The Los Rodriguez coffee farms, managed by the Rodriguez family, are pivotal in Bolivia's specialty coffee scene, particularly renowned for their exceptional Geisha variety. Through their company, Agricafe, the family has significantly influenced Bolivian coffee cultivation, emphasizing quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Pedro Rodriguez, alongside his children Daniela and Pedro Pablo, leads Agricafe, a company established in the 1980s. Initially focused on promoting coffee cultivation over coca, Agricafe has since transformed Bolivia's coffee landscape. In the 2010s, facing a decline in coffee farming, the Rodriguez family began cultivating their own specialty coffee and now operates 12 farms. They also support around 100 partner producers through their Sol de la Mañana program, offering training and support to enhance agricultural practices and coffee quality across the region.
The Rodriguez family's commitment to excellence is evident in their innovative approaches.
The Rodriguez family's farms, particularly in the Caranavi and Samaipata regions, provide ideal conditions for cultivating Geisha coffee. Their meticulous processing methods, including natural and lactic natural processes, enhance the coffee's flavor complexity. For instance, the Los Rodriguez Natural Geisha from Caranavi is noted for its silky sweet texture, spring florals, and vibrant tropical nuances.
In Samaipata, the family's pioneering efforts in coffee farming have transformed the region into a notable area for specialty coffee production. Their farms benefit from a climate with warm days and cool nights, enhancing coffee quality, with harvests from June to December.
The Rodriguez family's commitment to excellence is evident in their innovative approaches to coffee processing and their dedication to sustainability, earning them recognition in the specialty coffee industry.
