METAD
This micro lot is from METAD Agricultural Development PLC (METAD), a third-generation family-owned business with a fascinating history. After World War II, the Ethiopian Emperor granted land in the Guji and Sidama zones to Muluemebet Emiru, the first African female pilot and family matriarch, which later became the Hambela Coffee Estate. METAD is presently managed by Aman Adinew, who returned to Ethiopia after working at the executive level for multiple Fortune 500 companies abroad to make a difference for his family and community.
Under Aman's leadership, METAD has provided employment opportunities, including a workforce that consists of over 70% women, educational opportunities, including university scholarships and sponsorship for a state-of-the-art elementary school with more than 700 students, and healthcare for employees. METAD was also the first to partner with Grounds for Health in Ethiopia to implement a successful cervical cancer screening program for women in coffee-growing communities.
METAD has an expanding Out-grower program, which offers technical assistance, shares modern farming equipment, and provides certification programs for more than 5,000 local farmers who are paid premiums for their cherry and second payments after coffee is sold. Quality and certification premiums have also helped METAD build roads and community centers. METAD also has the first and only private state-of-the-art SCAA certified coffee quality control lab on the African continent, which is used to train both domestic and international coffee professionals.
METAD's Out-grower program assists over 5,000 local farmers with technical aid, modern equipment sharing, and certification programs.

Ethiopian heirloom
The heirloom refers to coffee varieties that are naturally found in the country or region. As the birthplace of coffee, Ethiopia has around 10,000 to 15,000 heirloom varieties that grow in the wild. However, many of these varieties have yet to be genetically identified.
The Ethiopian heirloom variety is typically classified into two groups: JARC varieties and regional landraces. JARC varieties, like 74110 and 74158, are developed by the Jimma Agricultural Research Centre. These strains are bred to be more resistant to diseases while still retaining their native qualities. The regional landraces are strains that grow naturally in the wild and are indigenous to a specific region. For instance, the Badessa, Khudumi, Miqe, Sawa, and Wolichu varieties are native to the Guji area.
