This outstanding coffee is produced by Luis Anibal Calderon in Villa Betulia located in Acevedo in the Huila Department, Colombia. Luis has been growing coffee for over 40 years. Having had many financial difficulties because of C-Market volatility, he decided to plant Geisha with the hope of a better price for his coffees. It was a great decision and paid off greatly. Seeing its success he invested more time cultivating other exotics varieties to this day.
To produce this amazing coffee, only the ripest cherries are picked and sorted. The cherries are then fermented in an aerobic environment for 15 hours. The next step is to depulped the cherries and dry them on raised beds until they reach 11% moisture content.
This variety is part of the Ethiopian Landrace genetic lineage. Historically it originated from the coffee forest in Ethiopia. The seeds were collected and sent to the Lyamungu research station in Tanzania and then to CATIE in Central America, where it was logged as accession T2722.
Geisha’s popularity began in Panama when it broke the record price in 2005 in the “Best of Panama” competition and action. This variety is getting more popular each year. In 2020 it reached the highest auction price at US$1300.50 per pound at the Best of Panama auction.
